Solid Ground, The Right Road
LR-10385-2, www.solidgroundmusic.net, Playing time: 34 min
According to their website, Solid Ground has been playing bluegrass gospel in the southeastern U.S. for more than a decade. This longevity shows in their sound; the band might as well be called "Solid Sound". Lead singer Trent Harrelson has a pleasant warm voice with just the right amount of a twang. He is joined by son Alan on banjo and baritone vocals. Bill Carr thumps the bass and sings tenor and lead, while his daughter, Jenny, covers a variety of vocals. Chase Johner carries the mandolin duties on this CD and does a great job of adding melodic fills and breaks. In addition to singing, Trent Harrelson adds quite a bit of tasty flat picked guitar. The overall sound of the CD is clear, well separated, and professional.
The Right Road has a good selection of bluegrass gospel songs with a nice mix of new and established songs. "I'm Ready to Go", "Look to the Son", "Don't Stop", and "Sky Full of Angels" can be classified as standouts. Solid Ground does a nice version of "Another Soldier Down", on which Jenny Carr sings a fine lead. All the songs have good melodies and after enough repeats, you'll catch yourself singing along with them.
In addition to The Right Road, Solid Ground has a previous CD, "Little Mountain Church" and their website offers a special on both CDs. Fans of good bluegrass gospel should surf right over to their website for additional information.
